Micah Lexier’s I’m Thinking of a Number is a survey of selected items produced in editions by and for the artist over the past 30 years. Lexier’s work is often about measurement, including quantity, numbers and ratios, and therefore a book exactly 300 pages long, with page 1 starting on the front cover, and page 300 falling on the back cover, is fitting and reflects his sense of design, subtlety and attention to detail. The objects are shown in context, with the artist’s friends and collegues holding various items, revealing their scale, or use. Each item is represented in three ways – as a written description, in a photograph and as a size relational line drawing found in the center of the book. The last item is physically inserted in the book and is the only work not to appear in a photograph since the viewer has the work in their possession.

Micah Lexier is an artist, a collector and a curator. He has a deep interest in measurement, numbers and the kinds of casual marks we make in our day-to-day lives. He has had over 90 solo exhibitions, participated in over 150 group exhibitions and produced a dozen permanent public commissions. Lexier’s work is in the collections of The British Museum (London, England), the Contemporary Art Gallery (Sydney, Australia), The National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa) and The Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto). The Press of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design was established in 1972 as a vehicle to publish books by and about leading contemporary artists. Between 1972 and 1987, 26 titles by such artists as Michael Snow, Steve Reich, Gerhard Richter and Yvonne Rainer were published. Relaunched in 2002, The Press has once again established the university as a source for the publishing of primary documents and scholarly works in the fields of contemporary art, craft and design.
