Dark+Speed is a book of photographic prints by Ryan Thompson. The publication is a hybrid project relying on photography and printmaking. Thompson begins his photographs by layering in camera multiple exposures to produce an image on film. Prints are made from the film, these prints are then digitally scanned to produce a paper plate used for printing on a mimeograph machine.
The process begins by building up an archive of imagery on a single frame of film. These original photographs contain an immense amount of information, colour, shape, texture and light. Step by step this information is stripped away to reveal a binary image.
The images in Dark+Speed have a grainy, halftone, nostalgic dream like sensation. They make sense and don’t at the same time. They are a dream, a memory, an advertisement and an overheard conversation.

Ryan Thompson is a photographer / printmaker based in Victoria, British Columbia. Thompson layers found typography, pop culture icons, textures and shapes using multiple exposures on film. “I believe light through film is one of the most honest ways to make an image. I use film because the same light that passes through my eyes has passed through that film and it has physically been there with me. Digital shots are just an algorithm of an experience.”
