Bringing together unprecedented partnerships, processes, and people was a means to assert our collective presence in the future time-sense of Toronto. The behind-the-scenes production and the final procession, both were rehearsals: for the creation of new social relations, on the one hand, and for new ways of participating in the civic and cultural life of our city, on the other. This display of 300 people, all from different backgrounds, ages, abilities, and cultures linked together through costume and movement, was an image of Toronto’s potential.

The project wasn’t about belonging to a place but belonging with it. The procession made visible our achievements. After two years of working, learning, and making this project together, on August 9, 2015, all who partook in Ring of Fire became symbols of the city and had a determining presence in the civic reality of what constitutes its culture and ideals. The police, Queen’s Park, City Hall. All worked for us that day! – Emelie Chhangur, Curator and Dramaturge, Ring of Fire.
